Incorporating diagrams into the training facilitated performance on measures of integrative knowledge (i.e., the integration and application of. This study investigated how instructional strategies can support learners' knowledge acquisition and metacomprehension of complex systems in a computer-based training environment, and how individual characteristics interact with these manipulations. Our experience shows that even simple, intuitive, and logically consistent modifications to complex interfaces have dramatic positive usability effects, and can be easily applied to different pieces of security software in order to reduce the impediment to uptake by novice users. reverting some components to their original design does not nullify the benefit of other modifications. Several of our design choices turn out to have been misguided, making some tasks more difficult in our modified interface, but fortunately our alterations are mutually independent, i.e. We observe not only measurable speed-ups of common tasks, but also improved user-reported ease of use ratings. We evaluate the two interfaces through a randomized user study in a controlled laboratory setting, and determine that the new interface is significantly easier to understand and faster to use, especially for novice computer users. Using rigorous interface design principles, we derive several concrete changes that would make the software easier to use, and construct a new interface to test our theories. Using widely accepted user interface analysis methods, we examine a popular free and open source disk encryption software package, and find that it is far from accessible to ordinary users. The problem is compounded by software, security policies, and user interfaces that are difficult to use and understand. Non-use or incorrect use of security software is one major reason for privacy breaches of all scales. However, the MMB was more successful with users with tech backgrounds, suggesting that a more detailed MMB would have been better for average users. After our MMB, 4/5 participants were able to achieve at least one sub-task, with two successfully completing the entire task. Before the MMB, participants were asked to secure a file using VeraCrypt and none were successful. We also conducted a user study to verify VeraCrypt’s usability and to test the MMB with users. They concluded that the MMB would be helpful for users. We did a Cognitive Walkthrough with usability experts to test VeraCrypt’s interface and the effectiveness of an attempt to help ease use through a mental model builder (MMB) in the form of a short instructional text. One way of improving its usability is to better support user mental models by changing the functionality description. It has known usability issues which limit its reach to a wider audience. VeraCrypt is a popular free and open source file encryption software that encrypts disks and partitions.
